Camping at Mount Tobe
September 14, 2024

Kevin and his son Everett loaded up N3472C and flew down to Mount Tobe (N41) in Waterbury, Connecticut for an overnight camping trip. It's less than an hour's flight from Minute Man, and the kind of trip that reminds you why you learned to fly in the first place.
Mount Tobe is a beautiful grass field tucked into the Connecticut countryside. What makes it even better is the campsites and fire pits right on the field, complete with firewood — all maintained by the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF). You land, tie down, and you're camping. No car, no shuttle, no hassle.
We set up camp, got a fire going, and spent the evening under the stars next to the airplane. There's something about sleeping next to your airplane on a quiet grass strip that's hard to beat.
The RAF does great work preserving and improving airfields like this for recreational pilots. Improvements to Mount Tobe were made in 2025 with a 2024 RAF grant. If you're not familiar with the RAF, check them out — they're worth supporting (I do!).
A tailwheel airplane and a grass strip camping trip with your kid. Doesn't get much better than that.
